5 out of 5 stars Good purchase if you need cordless phones   September 2, 2010
John K. Laird
The Panasonic system is good quality with both clear speakerphone on each handset (which I use all the time) and large display that is backlit when ringing and dialing. With five handsets you can distribute around the home. I put one in a detached garage that about 175 feet from the base unit through three walls so it does have range for most applications. Battery life is good, and now the new units have replaceable AA batteries (unlike the older units that had speciality replacement batteries). Good value for the money.

4 out of 5 stars Like this machine, but has a big flaw I didn't expect   August 31, 2010

Bought this unit a couple of weeks ago from Amazon. I'm also a member at Costco and realized after the fact that they had the same/similar unit for what I think is a cheaper price, so check there first if you have access.

So far so good except for one item I'll get to in a moment. Setup was a breeze, batteries require charging for 24 hours before you use them and the battery indicators are pretty advanced on these units compared to the other cordless phones I've owned (many different systems). Sound quality and range are both very good, and I've used the handset with both a plug-in headset and speakerphone and its fine. First system I've owned that has integrated handsets that share a phonebook and also display info from the base unit, nicely done. I don't currently have caller ID on the home line so can't comment on that feature.

The big flaw in this unit is that the answering machine DOES NOT BEEP when you have a messaging waiting. I place the unit outside of the 'normal path' in our kitchen and every single answering machine I've owned in the past 30 years has an audible alert to let you know a message is waiting. This one doesn't. I've read the manual, played extensively with the unit options and even called Panasonic and they said "sorry, there is a visual notification on handset". So every handset lets you know there is a message with an alert, and the base unit has a tiny little red LED light that blinks, but no beep or chirp to let you know there is a message waiting. I suppose I'll get used to it and learn to look at the phone every time I walk into the house, but I don't want to and don't like it. If you have the unit somewhere you don't look it regularly and care about getting your messages, get something else.

Compared to: I replaced an AT&T 5.7 ghz + 3 handset unit (~3 years old) with this device because the base unit stopped charging the handset. Also have a second Motorola 5.8 ghz set on the upstairs of our house for work and in bedrooms.

5 out of 5 stars Great System   August 27, 2010

The phones are distributed around the house. The main location (base station) needs to be connected to a phone line, but the others sit in their cradle that only needs power for charging. Really like the intercom system (you can call from on phone to the other), call blocking (with caller id you can block telemarketers - they get a ring and then a busy signal), being able to "drain" messages from any house phone (you don't need to go to the base station and, of course you can "drain" them from any remote location with a passcode), and etc.

5 out of 5 stars Panasonic does it again   August 26, 2010

I really love these phones. It is a great upgrade from our old Panasonic phones that we had. My favorite feature is that these phones have the call block feature. Before I would have to use the call block feature with Comcast digital voice, but now I can set it on the phone. Plus you can block up to 50 numbers. Another handy feature is the ability to name the phones. You can name them KITCHEN, or BEDROOM, for example. It may seam silly to some, but for some of us there is a real comfort of knowing that the living room phone really is in the living room.

The menus are a bit more complicated then my older model, (that tends to happen when you keep adding more features to the phone) but you can still navigate them without the use of a user manual.

I read a lot of reviews before buying this phone. The most common complaint was that the phone volume when talking was not loud enough, or that the sound was tinny. I have to say that I have not experienced either one. The volume has been just fine and my conversations have sounded great.

Overall this is a great phone and I have told other friends looking to upgrade their home phones about this model.
